Sauti Sol is a Kenyan Afro-pop band, initially an a Capella Group formed in 2005, with Alliance Francaise in Nairobi being their Haven. They were finalists of the spotlight on Kenya Music in 2006 at the Alliance Francaise and after which they got signed by Penya Records. Soon than later, began going more shows at the same venue in Nairobi with their first solo-concert being on April 2008 whose response has since being magnificent and overwhelming.

Sauti Sol started as a Capella group before deciding to form the band and call it a Swahili word “Sauti” whose meaning is “Voice” and later added the Spanish word “Sol” with a hidden meaning of the Sun whose agenda meaning being “Voices in the Sun”. The band is formed by four 254 gentlemen whose names are namely: Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno.

Sauti Sol’s Baraza, Chimano and Mudigi met and attended Upper Hill High school for their Secondary education education where they were also together as a music group performing as Voices of Light while still in school and cleared their O-levels in 2005. Soon than later, they met guitarist Otieno, who attended Strathmore School, at the Alliance Francaise in Nairobi becoming a band group of four members.Individually each member is a graduate from their various University they attended where Chimano attended the University of Nairobi (UON) for a degree in Journalism, Mudigi studied banking and accountancy at African Nazarene University, Otieno is a graduate of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) with bachelor degree in Actuarial Science and lastly Baraza is an alumni of United States International University (USIU) having studied Journalism.

Sauti Sol band is formed by skilled professionals with their respective instruments they are good at playing and great blessed vocals. Chimamo is brilliant in playing saxophone, Keytar and good in backing vocals, Baraza is one of the lead vocals and a guitarist, Mudigi is good in backing vocals, percussion and drums and forgetting well fined tuned guitarist Otieno. Moreover, being masterminds behind hit songs Nishike and Sura yako, they are such impressive and brilliant dancers, not forgetting the sensuality they enhance in their unique style of music; topping charts and being such a global phenomenon with exponential success.

Sauti Sol released their debut studio and first album – Mwanzo, on 4 August 2009.Two years later, on 25 February 2011, they released their second studio album – Sol Filosofia.Their third studio album, which is yet to be titled, is set for release in late 2014. In the long run some music in these albums have earned the band a number of accolades, awards and nominations.

From a young age in their native Kenya Bien, Chimano, Delvin and Polycarp were conditioned to believe that music was a worthless pursuit. Together they fought hard against these cultural stereotypes and developed a unique confidence in their art that provides an exciting fuel for their music and live performances. The band became recognized when they participated in the Spotlight on Kenyan Music competition, hosted by Alliance Française de Nairobi, in 2006 and emerged as finalists in the competition and then followed by being signed to Kenyan rapper Waweru’s Penya Records label releasing their first ever and highly anticipated debut album on the 12th of December 2008 at the Kenya National Museum. The album was a fusion of African sound with and urban feel with most of the songs were extremely well received while performed live and since then they have a continuously growing fan-base.The band has had successful tours in Europe as well as in Africa, topped Kenyan charts and gained international attention with shows in Europe and the US, as well as television appearances and various accolades, awards and nominations, not forgeting their 2011 concert performance in Kenya with South African a capella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The band is inspired by the choices, consequences and challenges that the Kenyan youth face and the need to revamp the music industry with a different unique sound that cuts across all age groups. Musically, they are inspired by Fadhili Williams, Daudi Kabaka and other established African artists such as Salif Keita and Lokua Kanza.

Sauti Sol has humbly received awards along way from the time they kicked off in their journey of music including in 2010 they received a Museke Online Africa Music Award (MOAMA) for Best Group. In 2011, they won two Kisima Music Awards for Best Afro-Fusion Group and Best Music Video with their song -Coming Home. In 2012 the band won Best Collaboration at Kenyan Chaguo La Teeniez (CHAT) Awards. In 2013, Sauti Sol was crowned as Artist of the Year at Kenya’s inaugural Social Media (SOMA) Awards.
